What makes me want to draw?

January and February are hard when it comes to finding motivation for ANYTHING. So here’s to remind all of you (and to myself) that there are many things in this world that can make us want to create. Well, in that case draw.

So. What makes me want to draw?

  1. Observing people.

My number one FOR SURE. I love watching people. Going to markets or a busy cafe with a sketchbook and just sketch anyone who’s passing by, observing their clothes, their movements, the little emotions passing through their faces. It is the best kind of entrainment there is.

2. Walking.

Especially alone and especially without my phone. Sometimes just being outside and letting your mind float as it wants is all it takes to get ideas moving.

3. Watching other people create.

And hearing about their process too! I think I always learn a new thing when I see someone else drawing. We are doing the very same activity, but at the same time everything is different - what we notice, how we use tools, where do we put our feelings.

4. Waking up from a good nap.

Aaaah so simple, yet so effective. You know that feeling when after the nap everything seems so soft and unproblematic? I love to catch it in my sketchbook.

5. And finally going to museums!

A visit to a good exhibition makes me dream and makes me want to be bolder, to explore fresh things, to collaborate with other creative people.

Of course there is more. But I am curious about you - what makes YOU want to draw? I asked on ig (here to visit) - and I got answers of all kind. Movies about artists, your loved ones, the contrasts between solid forms and planes, colours and lines, faces, squirrels, coffee, nature, people’s homes and others.

I love that each of us sees something different in reality - something that makes them go „oh wait I need to draw THAT”.

And one more thing. If you love to draw together and are from Heidelberg, you can join my Sketchbooking Workshops, where we explore creating in a playful and relaxed way. Next one in February!
